CHANDIGARH: With the beginning of new innings for freshers, most of the city colleges wore a festive look on Wednesday. Boys clad in loose T-shirts and baggy jeans could be seen heading towards colleges while girls made a fashion statement with knee-length denims, trendy tees and big sunglasses; others preferred the comfort of salwar-kameez.
While some colleges organized orientation ceremonies to break the ice between juniors and seniors, others left it to the students.

Making sure that new-comers did not loose out on anything, Government College for Girls, Sector-11, organised an introductory session where students were informed about their classes and general norms of the college.
The institute also arranged a special help desk for freshers��� queries. ���We had deployed a team of the staffers to make announcements so that no student gets confused of her department or lecture,��� said Promila Kaushal principal of Government College for Girls, Sector-11.
Since our college has a large strength we are looking forward to organizing a formal orientation ceremony in a day or two for different departments separately as well, she added.
Excitedly talking about her first day in college, an elated Chhavi Sharma, a first-year student of arts in GCG-11, who will be staying away from her parents for the first time, said: ���The best part of becoming a college student is the freedom from school uniform besides hanging out wherever you feel like. Though I couldn?t make many friends on the first day, I found people warm and welcoming.���
When asked about the fear of ragging Gurpreet Singh, first-year student of GC-11 said: ���Amidst such tight rules there���s no scope of the freshers being ragged. In fact seniors are rather helping us.��� However, in Government College-46, the teachers and principal, not students addressed students on the first day of the session.
College principal KS Saluja said the teachers addressed the students and motivated them to be prepared for the future and to become a responsible citizens.
